The walking and cycling improvements in central St Albans are designed to:
- enhance north-south connections;
- complement existing active travel routes, including National Cycle Network Route 6 and the St Albans Green Ring;
- make it safer and easier to walk and cycle to the city centre, train station, council offices and local schools;
- support the objectives in the Local Transport Plan and Sustainable Hertfordshire Strategy to decrease the number of trips people take by car, thereby reducing congestion, improving air quality, and boosting physical and mental health of local communities.
Delivery of improvements
We've scheduled the improvement works to begin on 24 June 2024 and continue until early October 2024.
Our highways contractor, Ringway, is carrying out the work in four phases to keep disruption to a minimum. We are working hard to minimise any impacts but apologise in advance for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience while the improvements are completed.
Overnight carriageway resurfacing works
As the improvements near completion, some overnight road closures will be needed so that carriageway resurfacing works can be completed. These are expected to start at the end of August and continue into early September.
Update
The main improvement work has been completed in St Albans, with some minor works still outstanding.
You can find out more about the project on the St Albans scheme page.
Building on the success of the completed Stonehills Square project, we are delivering improvements to further enhance the town centre and make travelling to, from and around Welwyn Garden City easier and safer for people walking and cycling.
We have delivered:
- Dedicated space for cycling on Bridge Road, Wigmores North and Fretherne Road to make it safer to cycle in and out of the town centre.
- Crossing improvements over Osborn Way and around Howardsgate to improve access around the gardens.
- A town centre wide 20mph zone to create a calmer town centre environment.
Final works
We are now completing some additional work to finalise the project.
From 11 November until late November 2024, we will be complete minor work in the town centre. This includes installing new bollards and replacing broken slabs at Fretherne Road, Stonehills, Osborn Way, Wigmores North and Howardsgate.
No road closures are required and access to properties will be maintained. Businesses in the town centre will remain open throughout the works. There may be some temporary, short pedestrian diversions whilst the works are underway. Work will take place from 9.30am until 4pm, Monday to Friday.
This work is part of the improvements to further enhance the town centre and make travelling to, from and around Welwyn Garden City easier and safer for people walking, wheeling and cycling.
Early next year, we will be delivering the final stages of work, which may require some short-term, localised road closures. We will be in touch closer to the time with further details.
More about the Welwyn Garden City town centre scheme
We're progressing with Buncefield Lane quietway and Boundary Way roundabout schemes in Hemel Hempstead. Together, the schemes will better connect people between their workplace and homes in and around Leverstock Green, Maylands and Woodhall Farm.
Buncefield Lane quietway
The new quietway will provide a safe and attractive walking, wheeling and cycling route through the heart of Maylands along Buncefield Lane.
Improvements at the southern section of the quietway have been completed, including a new signal-controlled crossing on Breakspear Way and shared use path between Green Lane and Breakspear Way.
The next phase of the quietway will continue along Buncefield Lane between Boundary Way and Three Cherry Trees Lane. Bollards will be installed to create a low-traffic route and the junctions at Boundary Way and Tree Cherry Trees Lane will be rearranged to reduce vehicle speeds and give more priority to those walking, wheeling and cycling.
Work will start on 16 September and is expected to be completed in mid-November 2024. We will be delivering the work in phases to minimise disruption.
Boundary Way roundabout
We will introduce a ‘Dutch-style’ roundabout at Boundary Way to make it safer for those walking and cycling. The improvements will include a dedicated space for people cycling around the entire junction, separated from the carriageway as well as pedestrian crossings and widened footways.
Final design work is currently being carried out with construction expected to begin following the completion of Buncefield Lane quietway. More information will be provided closer to the time.
