Healthy homes for professionals

Our priorities

In Public Health, we've developed the 'healthy homes programme' which prioritises:

  1. Quality of housing conditions, including damp and mould
  2. The cost of living and fuel poverty.

To deliver healthier homes, we're working with:

  • Environmental Health
  • Housing department teams
  • Housing associations
  • Community Protection
  • Sustainability
  • Adult Care Services
  • NHS services
  • Other service providers, including the National Energy Foundation.

Key messages

Cost research shows the health impact of poor housing quality costs the NHS £1.4 billion a year. For every £1 spent on improving homes, the NHS will save £70 over 10 years.

In Public Health we are encouraging health and social care professionals to consider the environments they encounter in their every day work.

Referral and pathways

Healthy Homes

To support professionals in identifying and addressing housing-related health risks, Public Health and local Environmental Health and Housing teams across Hertfordshire have developed two resources:

These booklets are designed to help you assess the severity of issues such as damp and mould and to make timely, appropriate referrals.

You can also use the postcode finder to locate the correct housing team for your area.

Fire safety

If you identify fire risks or vulnerable individuals during your visits, please also refer them for a free Home Fire Safety Visit. These visits provide:

  • tailored fire safety advice
  • smoke alarm installation
  • support to reduce fire hazards.

To make a referral, complete the Home Fire Safety Visit Referral Form.

To discuss other referral and pathway queries, please email healthyplaces@hertfordshire.gov.uk.
