Business wanting to sign up?

We are always looking for businesses and providers within Hertfordshire to sign up to offer support to our children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

If you would like to offer support, please contact us at hertscard@hertfordshire.gov.uk and include details of what you're able to offer.

It's worth showing your Herts Card wherever you go, as with the previous HAND card we've heard from parents that lots of places have accepted it when it was shown.

We also have a Herts Card for those who are eligible for Free School Meals. Find out more.

What is the disability register?

Under the Children Act 1989, we are required to keep a register of disabled children and young people. It's your choice if you want to register, and you don't need to be in our database to access our support and services.

The database helps us to:

  • identify and plan for the needs of children with special educational needs and disabilities and their families.
  • monitor our services

Who can sign up?

Your child or young person does not need a formal diagnosis in order to sign up to the additional needs database, but we do request that you have one of the following:

  • Middle or higher rate Disability Living Allowance or any Personal Independence Payments
  • Or a letter from your GP, School SENCO or other professional confirming your child’s need - evidence of a formal diagnosis is not needed, just evidence of their level of need

When you sign up, we'll ask you to tell us:

  • Your name, contact details and address
  • Your child's name, gender and date of birth
  • Your child's NHS number
  • Information about your child's disability

We won't share any of this information - it's completely confidential.

SEND News

When you sign up to Herts Card (SEND), you will be asked if you wish to subscribe to our fortnightly SEND newsletter which provides you with the latest from SEND services, and fills you in on what's going on in the county - including activities, support groups and courses for parents.

If you don't want to join the register, but you do want to receive the newsletter, you can subscribe to SEND news.

An opportunity to influence planning of future services

Through our SEND newsletter you'll hear about consultations and opportunities to feedback on services, so that we can use what you tell us to make improvements.

The SEND community services directory

The Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Community Activities Directory promotes a wide range of community activities for families and young people with SEND, and is a comprehensive resource for families and professionals.

Tailored for children and young people aged 0-25, and their families, this is a valuable tool for finding local activities and support groups in the community.
