Monday to Thursday, 9am – 5pm

Friday, 9am – 4pm

Weekends – open for ceremonies but closed for registration appointments.

Facilities and parking

  • Appointments are conducted in offices on the ground and first floor. If you need the ground floor office for an appointment, call 0300 123 4045. 
  • The ceremony room is on the ground floor.
  • There is a disabled access toilet on the ground floor and further toilets on the first floor.

Parking

  • Parking is managed by a private company and is enforced. Failure to record your vehicle details, or parking in the incorrect spaces, could lead to a fixed penalty notice being issued.
  • If there is no parking available, please use nearby public parking.
  • Separate arrangements can be made for disabled parking.

 

Appointments

  • There is limited parking to the rear of the building, which can only be used for the duration of your appointment.
  • You must park in a space that says 'Register Office Parking Only' (bays 37-48). There are signs up but you can still use the car park.
  • You must register your vehicle details as you enter the building.

 

Weekday ceremonies (Monday to Friday)

  • There is limited parking for the couple, which can only be used for the duration of your ceremony.
  • You must park in a space that says 'Register Office Parking Only' (bays 37-48). There are signs up but you can still use the car park.
  • You must register your vehicle details as you enter the building.
  • Guests are advised to use nearby public parking.

About St Albans Register Office

The Gatehouse was originally the governor’s residence of a Victorian prison and is a unique setting for any ceremony.

The ceremony room is situated on the ground floor and has been furnished with bespoke furniture to reflect the building’s historic character.

The Gatehouse is surrounded by beautiful gardens which feature a striking 1840 siege cannon.

The original prison doors and walls, which have featured in many television and film productions, provide a picturesque and unusual backdrop for photographs.
