Charges and concessions
Some library services cost a small fee.
Overdue charges
For books, magazines and talking books:
- 28p per day, up to £11.76
- reduced rate: 8p per day, up to £3.36 (reduced rate is for children, carers, people with disabilities and people on low income).
After 3 weeks, an overdue reminder will be sent. You'll be charged 87p if this is sent by post. But, if we have your email address, we'll send you a reminder email for free.
There are no overdue charges for ebooks and e-audiobooks.
You can pay charges in your local library.

There are no reservation charges on Hertfordshire libraries stock for:
We'll let you know when your reservation is available to collect. You'll be charged 85p if this is sent by post. But, if we have your email address, we'll send you an email for free.
Talking book loans
- £1.75 per set for 3 weeks.
There is no charge for:
- children and young people under 19
- people with a disability or reading difficulty
- carers
- Home Library Service users
- downloadable audiobooks via Borrowbox
- language learning talking books.
Lost library cards
If you lose your library card, come in to the library and we'll give you a replacement card for £1.65.
Lost and damaged stock
If you damage an item, you may be asked to pay the full replacement cost.
We do not charge for the replacement of damaged stock for the under-5s e.g. board books and picture books.
If you lose an item, we will charge you the full replacement cost. If you find the item and return it within 1 month of paying the replacement cost (and it is still in good condition), we will refund you the replacement cost.
Overdue charges are not refundable.
Printing costs (A4 only)
- 25p – single page, black and white
- 65p – single page, colour.
Photocopier
- 20p for A4 black and white
- 40p for A3 black and white
- 60p for A4 colour
- £1.20 for A3 colour.
