Asbestos is hazardous waste. Don't put it in your bin at home. We accept small quantities of household asbestos at Welwyn Garden City Recycling Centre and Ware Recycling Centre by prior booking only.

The asbestos home collection service ended on 21 February 2025.

Requests submitted before this date will be completed in early March.

From mid-March, residents will be able to book a slot to take asbestos to Ware and Welwyn Garden City recycling centres.

Until then, if you have asbestos to dispose of, you'll need to find a private contractor. Alternatively, wait until you can book a slot at the recycling centres, if it's safe to do so.

Household asbestos disposal

From mid-March 2025, residents can book a slot to dispose of up to 20kg of bonded white asbestos, also known as chrysotile asbestos. We don't accept any other type of asbestos. If you’re not sure whether your asbestos is bonded white (chrysotile), you’ll need to get a private contractor to confirm

This household asbestos disposal service will be available at Ware Recycling Centre and Welwyn Garden City Recycling Centre and can be used once in a 12 month period per household.

How to safely package your waste

You must properly package your asbestos waste before attending your booking slot. As per HSE guidelines, asbestos waste must be double bagged and taped securely in UN approved packaging, using a red inner bag with asbestos warnings and a clear outer bag.

You can buy approved asbestos waste bags online and from various DIY stores.

We won't accept waste in split or torn packaging.

Failure to follow this guidance may result in your waste being refused.

We will only accept asbestos where:

  • it is bonded white (chrysotile)
  • it has been correctly packaged
  • you pre-booked a slot at Ware or Welwyn Recycling Centres.
