Hertfordshire County Council

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow you to create, manage and analyse information, particularly about location.

GIS connects data with maps to help you understand patterns and relationships in a geographical context.

Mapping data provides insight about locations and populations, vital for a range of sectors across health, education, manufacturing and insurance.

Terms of use

These maps are subject to Ordnance Survey terms and conditions. This data is supplied without guarantee or any warranty as to the accuracy, currency or completeness.

Ordnance Survey Crown Copyright laws – authorisation to reproduce any of the material here must be obtained from the copyright holders.

Ordnance Survey responsibilities and ways of working

Hertfordshire County Council is a member of the Public Sector Geospatial Agreement (PSGA), meaning most of our spatial data is derived from Ordnance Survey (OS) maps. The current terms of use for OS licenced data does not allow its use in Google Maps.

All data is provided without guarantee, including but not limited to accuracy, completeness or fitness for a particular purpose.

Ordnance Survey licensing

Hertfordshire County Council is a member of the Public Sector Geospatial   Agreement (PSGA). In order for us to provide mapping to third parties, the third party needs to be properly licensed for the same Licensed Data and area of coverage or, where appropriate, enter into a licence agreement.

Contractor licence

A contractor must accept the terms of the Standard Form Contractor Licence agreement before we can provide mapping required to deliver a service on the county council's behalf.

This establishes and governs the contractual relationship between Hertfordshire County Council and the contractor. It aims to set out the responsibilities of both parties.

It's important to do this as early as possible in a project so we can provide the required mapping on time. These requirements also apply when requesting Ordnance Survey derived datasets. Access to the mapping will only be allowed for a specific, time-limited project and for the geographical area required.

You don't need to apply again if you're a third party already licensed for the same Ordnance Survey product and the geographical area that the information you are requesting has been generated from (a paper copying licence is not sufficient).

In this instance, email PSGA@hertfordshire.gov.uk.

End user licence

The PSGA allows Hertfordshire County Council to share licensed data (including Ordnance Survey derived data) with a person / organisation that we do not have contractual links with, but where the project or activity supports Hertfordshire County Council's core business.

To request mapping under the Public Sector End User Licence, you must first accept the conditions of the Public Sector End User Licence agreement.

You don't need to apply for an end user licence agreement if you are a member of the public requesting a single map showing county council data.

You don't need to apply again if you're a third party already licensed for the same Ordnance Survey product and the geographical area that the information you are requesting has been generated from (a paper copying licence is not sufficient).

In these instances, email PSGA@hertfordshire.gov.uk.

We're required to keep accurate and full records of Ordnance Survey data sharing, including requests for mapping. These may be requested by Ordnance Survey for audit purposes.

Some departments charge a fee for the provision of mapping information – this is to cover the administrative costs of responding to your request.
