The Cognition and Learning team (previously the SpLD team) are experienced specialist teachers with additional qualifications in specific learning difficulties (SpLD). 

We offer high-quality specialist training to primary and secondary mainstream, independent and special schools to help them support children and young people with persistent literacy and/or numeracy difficulties. There is a cost for this training. 


Cognition and Learning Team traded training offer for school professionals

We offer high quality specialist training to school professionals to help them support pupils with persistent learning. There will be a cost to schools for this training.  

This training will focus on developing the knowledge and skills of education professionals so that they can effectively meet the needs of children and young people with persistent literacy and numeracy difficulties including those with dyslexia and/or dyscalculia.

The practical training courses will provide school staff with assessments, strategies, resources and interventions to support children and young people with difficulties in learning to read, write, spell and use and understand numbers.

We will offer both practical face-to-face intervention modelling courses at local venues and online webinars.

Assessment tools and guidance

We have a range of documents and advice pages that can support education staff to help pupils with persistent literacy and/or numeracy difficulties. These include assessment tools and guidance which help a teacher to work out a child's level of need.

The Word Reading and Spelling assessment can be used by school staff to identify gaps in children's knowledge of phonics and common exception words to inform target setting and teaching of interventions. Guidance on identifying dyscalculia and supporting children and young people who have persistent difficulties in acquiring numeracy skills

An information pack all about phonological awareness, how pupils with phonological difficulties can be supported in school, and how to assess the level of phonological need.

Guidance on identifying writing difficulties and supporting Children & Young People who have persistent difficulties with acquiring writing skills.

This is a dynamic resource to support secondary schools, students and their families in meeting the needs of learners with specific learning difficulties.
