Last month our Supported Intern, Louis, attended the Step2Skills Inclusive Jobs Fair to learn more about the world of work and meet inclusive employers in Hertfordshire. Below, Louis tells us about his experience of the event, and why he would encourage other young people to go.

When I first heard about the Stevenage Step2Skills Inclusive Job Fair, I was curious to learn about different job opportunities nearby. I wanted to explore what various employers had to offer and get ideas for a future career. I attended the fair, which took place on October 24th, hoping to discover roles that matched my interests, particularly in the field of design—like graphic design.

At the fair, I did notice a variety of industries represented, from health services and retail to common services and assistance roles. I was especially interested in seeing if any stalls offered opportunities in graphic design, as that’s a field I’d love to learn more about. While I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for, I still gained some valuable insights by listening to employers share information about their roles and what they had to offer. I was particularly interested to hear that some employers provided workshops for newcomers, which I think could be really helpful for gaining initial experience.

In my opinion, a more open layout could have improved the experience by making it easier to approach each stall and gather information without feeling surrounded by a group of people.

For those who prefer a quieter or less crowded environment, I would highly recommend attending during the fair’s ‘low sensory quiet hour,’ which can be booked in advance. This option provides a calmer setting, ideal for exploring opportunities at one's own pace.

I can see the fair’s value for young people looking to discover local career options. For anyone searching for a local job or trying to learn about different fields, the fair could be a good resource.

In the end, my experience was mixed. Although I didn’t find the specific job opportunities I was hoping for, I believe it’s a useful event for people who are open to exploring a wide range of opportunities. If you’re considering attending the Inclusive Job Fair, it might be worth a visit if you’re looking for general information. But if you’re seeking a specific type of role, it’s best to go with an open mind and a readiness to learn about various industries.

These are my honest thoughts, and I hope they help anyone considering the fair in the future!

If you're interested in attending, there’s another Job Fair happening in Hemel Hempstead on 27th November. You can find more details here: Inclusive Job Fair - Hemel Hempstead Tickets, Wed, Nov 27, 2024 at 10:00 AM | Eventbrite
